Welcome back to Meld with Jazz!To all my beloved guests staying with NaiBnB, follow me on this beautiful Local Buddy journey from Regalia Residence. Personalisation has been the recent trend when travelling. Hence we got a local buddy to explore Kampung Bharu, so you won’t have to go through the hassle on deciding who to contact!
First, let me introduce Abang Fuad, a personality with great humour wearing a neon orange cap. Just a happy-go-lucky guy who managed to position himself in the tourist industry to bring unique and out-of-this-world experiences. Traditional tour guides might need to remember you after the trip. However, you’ll gain a forever relationship with Magical Kampung Baru.
Our journey started with a self-introduction at LRT Kampung Baru Station under drizzling rain. Looking over the station is a historical landmark in Kuala Lumpur, the Klang River, also known as the River of Life.
Click here for the History of how Kampung Baru was born !
We started the walk through Kampung Baru, exploring the scenes trapped in time within the fast pace city life. As locals, we grew up in an urban wonderland with huge shopping malls and busy highways. Everyone was in a rush towards the Merdeka dream of being the following developed country.
In this new village, you will experience and see the heritage and culture well-kept since the 50s.
Beautiful housing structures with a simple lifestyle filled the streets, and the welcoming smiles and waves were my favourite. This place brings me back to my childhood days when we would have snack and ice cream vendors at the school gates when school was over.
Luckily October is the fruiting season for rambutans ! You rarely see this funky looking if you are living outside of Southeast Asia. The flesh is jelly-textured with high sugar levels; a tip for picking the best ones is to examine how bright the colour is. The brighter the red, the sweeter. If you like sweet with a hint of sour, pick those with a touch of greens.
Along the way, you will see these magnificent structures of Traditional Malay Houses. There would be features of tiny details that will help you differentiate it, and you will see the lace of the roofs with the shape of the Syrian bell-tower upside down. These houses were built and lifted on all corners; the primary use was to prevent houses from being flooded, and they could be carried or moved to another location when needed. Moving houses would be something of the past, we rarely see it anymore, but if you have seen it, you can say it is your lucky day!
Abang Fuad read our minds as we passed by a local coffee shop in Kampung Baru; my friends ordered hot chocolates to warm ourselves in the cooling weather. I prefer a cup of iced latte to go. The next stop would be the day’s highlight as Abang Fuad invites us to his humble home for a tea break and bonding experience!
Curious about what a Traditional Malay Home looks like inside? Well, it was nothing like I expected, even as 23 years old local Malaysian. They say a house represents the aura and values of the family, which is indeed true. The warmth of loving memories and harsh enduring experiences filled this home; it felt alive, as if it had a personality. I could tell it was a musician’s home, the love for instruments and trinkets of adventures. We had tremendous fun sharing stories and even had a karaoke session in which we lost track of time.
Conversely, when we were ready to leave for the last stop; it was dark outside. A grand symbol was awaiting us at the gates, dear KLCC; what a beautiful figure throwing on her best dress for a show tonight. Why not, allow the pictures that we took during the road for our last meal *FYI, Delicious Satay* to show you the beauty of Kampung Baru.
At the end of the tour, we were back at LRT Kampung Baru Station and decided to drop by Saloma Link. Regardless, let us talk about the Saloma bridge next time. If have any questions me and my team are only a comment and text away! I will see you again in volume 3, don’t miss out on my FIRST VOLUME too!
