How Cold Is Genting Highlands? Best Time to Visit Antara Genting

Zhe Yee • July 20, 2026

Genting Highlands stays cool at 15–22°C year-round. Here's when to visit Antara Genting for the best highland experience.

If you've never been to Genting Highlands before, the cold tends to catch people off guard. Most visitors pack for a Malaysian trip — which usually means t-shirts, sandals, and maybe a light cardigan — and then step out of the car at 1,800 metres above sea level wondering why nobody warned them.

Consider this your warning.

How Cold Is Genting Highlands, really?

Genting Highlands sits at around 1,800 metres above sea level. At that altitude, the temperature doesn't behave like the rest of Malaysia.

Average temperature range: 15°C to 22°C year-round.

That's the daytime high on a clear day. Once the sun goes down — or the clouds roll in, which happens often — it drops further. On cooler nights, it can feel closer to 13°C or 14°C, especially if there's wind or mist.

To put that in context: 15°C in the highlands feels significantly colder than 15°C in an air-conditioned mall in KL. There's no shelter from the wind, the air is damp, and your body isn't used to it after years of 32°C humidity.

Antara Genting sits on the same ridge, so the temperature is the same — cool all day, cold at night, and genuinely chilly if it rains.

What to Wear at Genting Highlands?

You don't need a winter coat, but you do need more than a t-shirt.

  • A proper jacket — something windproof or fleece-lined. Hoodies work but get damp quickly if it mists.
  • Long pants — jeans or joggers. Shorts are fine during the day but uncomfortable at night.
  • Closed shoes or sneakers — the floors and walkways get cold. Sandals will make you miserable by evening.
  • An extra layer for sleeping — even with aircon off, some nights get cold enough that you'll want the extra blanket. NaiBnB units have blankets provided, but a light hoodie to sleep in doesn't hurt.

If you're bringing kids, pack one more layer than you think they'll need. Children feel the cold faster, especially after swimming or running around.

Does Genting Highlands Have Seasons?

Not in the traditional sense — Malaysia doesn't have four seasons. But Genting does have patterns worth knowing:

  • November to February — the wettest period. Northeast monsoon brings more frequent rain and mist. Temperatures drop further. Expect fog on many mornings. Not a bad time to visit, but pack heavier and expect to spend more time indoors.
  • March to May — drier and clearer. One of the better times to visit if you want outdoor views and less rain. Still cool, but more comfortable.
  • June to August — school holiday season. Weather is generally decent but the crowd levels go up significantly, especially on weekends. Prices peak during this period.
  • September to October — quieter months. Good weather, fewer tourists, more availability. Often underrated as a travel window.

Best Time to Visit Antara Genting

There's no single "best" time — it depends on what you're optimising for.

For good weather and fewer crowds: March to May, or September to October. You get clearer skies, less rain, and a much more relaxed experience without the school holiday rush.

For the best value: Weekdays. Antara Genting is noticeably quieter on weekdays — the mall is less crowded, parking is easier, and you can actually enjoy the facilities without queuing. If your schedule allows, a Wednesday to Friday stay is the sweet spot.

For atmosphere and events — the happening periods:

These are the times Antara Genting really comes alive:

  • Chinese New Year (January–February) — Antara Mall goes all out for CNY. Lion dances, Sichuan face-changing performances, ang pow collection, outdoor bazaars, and festive decorations throughout the mall. The cool highland air makes the whole celebration feel even more special. Book early — units fill up weeks in advance.
  • Christmas & New Year Countdown (December) — the end of year period is one of the most popular times to visit. Christmas decorations, countdown events, and a genuinely festive atmosphere across the mall. Great for families and couples alike.
  • Merdeka Day (August 31) — long weekend crowds head up to Genting, and Antara gets its share of the buzz. A good time to visit if you enjoy a lively atmosphere.
  • Other long weekends — Hari Raya, Deepavali, Wesak Day, and state public holidays all bring a wave of visitors up the hill. Antara Mall usually has something on during these periods, making it more than just a quiet highland escape.

If you're visiting during any of these peak periods, the experience is genuinely fun — but plan ahead. Units get booked out fast, the road up gets congested on the first day, and prices reflect the demand. Arriving a day early and leaving a day after the peak window makes a big difference.

Periods to avoid if you hate crowds: School holidays (June, November–December) and the first and last days of any long weekend. The road up to Genting gets seriously congested. If you have to visit during these periods, book at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance and leave before the Sunday evening rush.

A Quick Note on the Weather

Genting weather is unpredictable by nature. A perfectly clear morning can turn into thick mist by noon, and a grey sky can clear up just as fast. Don't plan your trip around a specific forecast — the highland microclimate does what it wants.

What this means in practice: always have an indoor backup plan. The good news is that if you're staying at Antara Genting with NaiBnB, you're already set. The bowling alley, karaoke room, pool, kids playroom, and gym are all inside the building — bad weather outside doesn't have to mean a bad day.
